We typically release betas before publicly releasing an official, signed firmware update. Testing them is a great way to try new features early and help us find issues before they reach everyone else.
The install process is different on each device, so follow the section for the Passport you are using.
Beta firmware is still under active development, and downgrading is not supported on either device. If you hit a problem on a beta build, you will need to wait for a newer beta or the official release containing the fix. Always make sure you have a current backup before installing one.
Passport Prime
Passport Prime betas are installed from a recovery file using the device's Recovery mode.
When the official release of that firmware version becomes available, you will need to repeat these same steps using the official release's recovery file.
Before you start
- A recent backup of your Passport Prime
- The beta's Recovery file, downloaded from our GitHub releases
. Its name ends in
-Recovery.bin - An external drive, either a microSD card or a USB flash drive
- A USB-C adapter, if your drive is not USB-C
Installing the beta
- Save the recovery file onto your external drive
- Power off Passport Prime by pressing and holding the power button until the device shuts down
- Power the device back on with a single tap of the power button
- While the Foundation logo is displayed, tap the power button repeatedly to enter the boot menu
- From the boot menu, tap Recovery
- On the Recovery screen, tap Firmware Recovery

- Connect your external drive to the USB-C port on the bottom of Passport Prime, using an adapter if needed
- Select the beta recovery file from the list
Passport Prime will verify and install the firmware, then restart onto the beta build.
If you run into anything unexpected, please reply in the relevant thread on our community forum so we can investigate during the beta period.
Passport Core
Passport Core betas are signed by our Beta PubKey, so you will need to load that onto the device before the beta firmware will install.
- Download and save beta-pub.bin, which can be found in the Github release files, onto a microSD card
- Navigate to Settings > Advanced > Developer PubKey
- Insert your microSD card that contains beta-pub.bin.
- Select Install PubKey
If you already have an existing Developer PubKey saved in Passport, first select Remove Pubkey.
Once beta-pub.bin is installed on your device, you can go ahead and install the beta firmware release as usual.
